Movies That Rock!

I was reading an article the other day about the best movies about music, so I figure, what the hell, I’ll post my top 5 and my bottom 5. Feel free to share yours.

Top 5
1. This is Spinal Tap
2. Stop Making Sense
3. 24 Hour Party People
4. The Song Remains the Same
5. Hard Days Night

5 worst
1. Rattle & Hum
2. Some Kind of Monster
3. Hysteria – the Def Leppard Story
4. Glitter
5. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonley Hearts Club Band

and just for the record, I only got to see about 5 minutes of "Glitter," and my decision was made.

I don't know what the criteria for "movies about music" is, but here's my two cents.

First off, I fail to understand how The Blues Brothers doesn't make every list like this.

The Commitments - actually just a fine movie in its own right about an up-and-coming R&B band in Dublin. The lead singer in the movie was 16 at the time and sounds awesome. I think he won a grammy.

Almost Famous - again, just a fine movie overall. Not sure if it totally fits the criteria.

Heavy Metal isn't on this list? Really?

The Rutles - the pre-fab four

And I'm gonna give an honorable mention to Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, which is both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious

You should really check out two great documentaries too: "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" and "The Devil and Daniel Johnston". These are easily two of the best music films of all time. I have some writeups and trailers for them on my blog here.

Good list though!

The Devil and Daniel Johnston was good, but depressing. And you have to include The Buddy Holly Story with the great Gary Busey.
