#1 Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song over #16 Pearl Jam – Porch
The unwashed boys from Seattle souls all went to the land of the ice and snow during Robert Plant’s first “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa YA!” With no remaining players, they had to forfeit.
#2 The Beatles – A Day in the Life over #15 Broken Social Scene – Anthems for a 17-Year Old Girl
This was a joke of a matchup. For Chrisssakes this song is so fuckin’ brilliant the last chord of it was used as the startup chime for a brand of computers that I bet half of you are using right now. ‘Nuff said.
#3 Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run over #14 Ride – Twisterella
The Boss runs over a great example brit power pop with Andy Bell strapped across the hood. This was a tough pick for me, personally.
#4 Sex Pistols – God Save The Queen over #13 The Strokes – You Only Live Once
The Strokes never had a chance with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious putting hard fouls on Julian Casablanca every time he touched the mic.
#5 Prince – I Would Die 4 U over #12 Sonic Youth – Teenage Riot
The Purple Blouses easily defeated the Dirty T-Shirts in a romp. We all know that Prince can drive to the hole at will.
#6 Elvis Costello – (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding over #11 Doves – There Goes the Fear
There was nothing funny about the ass whoopin’ that the 2nd (and best) Elvis in this tournament gave tonight.
#10 Nine Inch Nails – Wish over #7 Rod Stewart – Maggie May In what proves to be the only upset of this bracket, Trent Reznor bludgeons Rod Stewart to death early in the 1st quarter with his keyboard.
#8 Radiohead – The Bends over #9 Oasis - Supersonic The higher seeds return to dominance in this matchup, with Radiohead easily defeating Oasis. Ironically, the boys in Radiohead were enjoying cigarettes and alcohol throughout the game. Specifically, Dunhill’s and Gin and Tonics.
#1 Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song
#2 The Beatles – A Day in the Life
#3 Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run
#13 The Strokes – You Only Live Once (Something felt wrong about this pick. So I turned on "You Only Live Once" and now I feel much more justified)
#5 Prince – I Would Die 4 U (Something also feels wrong about this pick. Sonic Youth was one of the first bands I really liked, but their song doesn't hold up as well as Prince's. Maybe I'm getting too old?)
#6 Elvis Costello – (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding
#10 Nine Inch Nails – Wish
#8 Radiohead – The Bends

MW Here:
First, props to Mike V. for some hilarious, thoughtful writing. Well done, sir. Keep it up.
Now, my picks. The fact that they are the same as MV's should in no way be taken as some convoluted way to complement myself. The first round of the tournament offers few surprises.
#1 Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song
#2 The Beatles – A Day in the Life
#3 Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run
#4 Sex Pistols – God Save The Queen
#5 Prince – I Would Die 4 U
#6 Elvis Costello – (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding
#10 Nine Inch Nails – Wish
#8 Radiohead – The Bends
(May Oasis please perish in RD1? If not, I demand a recount supervised by a reputable accounting firm - if any still exist.)
#1 - Zeppelin, cuz when the levee breaks, we'll have no place to stay
#2 - Beatles, as A Day in the Life was worth two seeds by itself
#3 - Early Boss is good and the 1975 anthem holds up well. Bonus: Frankie Goes to Hollywood does a kick-ass cover of it.
#4 - A matchup between the Sex Pistols and the Clash might produce a black hole, so obviously they beat the Strokes.
#5 - Prince. Purple Rain. Charlie Murphy's stories. Enough said.
#6 - Burnt about his seeding, Elvis Costello (what's up with Elvii at #6?) rains fiery blows upon the Doves.
#7 - Rod Stewart, if for no other reason that being a part of some of the original supergroups. Oh yeah, and Trent Reznor kinda gives me the heebee jeebies.
#8 vs. #9 - Wow, who should I feel more sorry for? Well, when you get sued by Coca Cola for stealing lyrics and melody from an ad, you automatically forfeit, so the Gallagher boys are out. I'm crying today for Radiohead.
Despite this contest obviously being saturated with guys who like guys (i.e. guys who don't recognize the greatness of ACDC) I will continue to vote out of respect for my only hispanic friend (hopefully it will stay that way.)
1. Immigrant Song - Easy. Vikings kick the shit out of flannel wearing vegans.
2. A Dy in the Life - Not by much. I don't think either song is worthy of so much as half a head bang. Plus, with the exception of Helter Skelter, the Beatles just don't rock.
3. BORN TO FUCKING RUN - I sware to Jebus that if the Boss losses this one, I'm kicking a baby. ONE TWO THREE FOUR!
4. YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE - Mother-FUCK the Sex Pistols. The Strokes kick ass, the sex pistols did heroin and were talentless whiners.
4. Sonic Youth - This one was also easy. There are a lot of prince songs that could have won, but not I would Die 4 U. Let's Go Crazy, Pussy Control, Sex Motherfucker, 1999, Kiss, the list goes on and on.
5. Elvis Costello - What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding? Tons, but the song still makes the old head bob.
6. Maggie May - Bad ass fucking bar jam. Plus, it's the original Cougar Anthem.
7. Radio Head - Just cuz.
#16 Pearl Jam - Porch
I don't care that no one else voted for it, it is a sentimental favorite. Plus, not a huge Zeppelin fan.
#2 The Beatles - A Day in the Life
#3 Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
I prefer Thunder Road, but this one ain't bad either.
#4 Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen
#5 Prince - I would die 4 U
You cannot vote against his Purple Majesty
#6 Elvis Costello - (What's so funny 'bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding
#10 Nine Inch Nails - Wish
# 8 Radiohead - The Bends
#1 Led Zeppelin - I love Pearl Jam (OK, maybe just Eddie Vedder) but this is probably the best Zeppelin song out there that isn't totally annoying. I know they are an important band, but they are so overplayed!
#2 The Beatles - They are The Beatles, enough said. Plus this probably is the best track on Sgt. Pepper and it showcases both Mac and Lennon. Sorry Broken Social Scene. Awesome song, but you never stood a chance against The Beatles juggernaut.
#3 Bruce Springsteen - I thought The Boss was kinda over, but then he did that blazing set at the Superbowl. The dude can still rock. And Born to Run is as classic today as it was 30+ years ago.
# 4 Sex Pistols - I have a hard time with this one, because I think both bands are overrated. But i have to tip my hat to the Class of '76. They totally change the way I think about music.
#12 Sonic Youth - Gotta give it to the dirty t-shirts here. IF you had picked a better Prince song (And there are A LOT better songs from the little purple man), maybe I would have handed it to "The Artist." But gotta go with the coolest band of the late '80s/early '90s.
#6 Elvis Costello - His name is Elvis. Enough said. And he IS the better Elvis, even when you count skinny Elvis.
#10 NIN - Rod Stewart had like two good songs. Trent Reznor had at least three.
#8 Radiohead - Ah, this one was probably the hardest of all again. I guess that is why they are the #8/#9 match up; it should be hard. But gotta go with Radiohead. Oasis may be awesome, but Liam Gallagher is a wanker, so they lose points right there. Even the talented Noel cannot offset the tosser Liam.
