Play-In Game Results and Whiskey-A-Go-Go Bracket

The results for the play-in game are in and the winner by just 2 votes is Athens, GA own B-52’s with Rock Lobster. After that close one, they will now face off against the Clash in the CBGBs bracket later in the week.

Now that our brackets are set up, I will be posting them up 1 round at a time for several days to make sure that as many people can vote as possible.

In this post, there will be 8 match-ups, which equal all of the first round contests in the Whiskey-A-Go-Go bracket. I will keep these open until first thing Saturday morning. That gives everyone until late Friday night to submit his or her selections. To vote for these, you can just email me or post in the comments page, your winners for each match up.

#1 The Who – My Generation over #16 Stereophonics – Dakota. The Stereophonics got crushed in this opening day matchup.

#2 David Bowie – Space Oddity over #15 New Pornographers – Sing Me Spanish Techno. The New Pornographers never had a chance in this matchup with Rock-God, David Bowie.

#14 Van Halen – Hot For Teacher over #3 The Beach Boys – Sloop John B. A relatively close game, but Alex Van Healen's amazing drumming eventually wore our their fellow Californians.

#4 Nirvana – Drain You over #13 Flaming Lips –Race for the Prize. This was a buzzer beater, with Kirk Cobain's scream before the final chorus putting Nirvana over the top.

#5 Talking Heads – This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody) over #12 Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Y Control. A key East Coast matchup. A close game throughout, but the Talking Head's steady groove pulls it out in the 2nd half.

#11 Metallica – Creeping Death over #6 Elvis – Suspicious Minds. Elvis never stood a chance as the boys from San Francisco melted his fat face off with ear blistering guitar work.

#10 Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) over #7 AC/DC – Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N’ Roll). The French Canadians pull this off easily. AC/DC didn't come with their A-game.

#8 The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? over #9 New Order – Perfect Kiss. Won on a buzzer beater by Johnny Marr's guitar work, the Smith's pull out a tough one.

Can I just echo what Mike said? I made all the same picks before I ever saw his choices. And yeah, The Stereophonics didn't stand a chance.

1 the Who
2 Bowie - can you imagine Bowie in your funk? Whoa! W-E-F-U-N-K
14 as long as it's pre-Hagar cabo wabo, VH beats the BB
4 different songs and this one turns out different, but cultural significance alone carries Nirvana
5 TH, even tho let's face it, Byrne is a douche
6 The King, vastly underseeded perhaps due to the demographic of the target audience here, easily carries the day over creepy Sellouttica and their ASCAP-loving hegemony.
7 tough one here but AC/DC pulls it out mainly due to the fact that they're not French-Canadian
8 the Smiths. Meh
