1. Pictures of You, The Cure - Strange choice, I know. But the deep guitars, enigmatic lyrics and constant mellow beat make this a great song to drive around to. Also, the song is a lot longer than you think. That's a big part of my summer jams, I want the song to just keep going and take a bunch of turns. Pictures of you is everything I'm looking for.
2. Take Time, Masters of the Hemisphere - I have listened to Protest a Dark Anniversary 30 or 40 times every summer since I was in college. Not only is every song perfect, it's one of those albums that never "grows up." You can't listen to it and not immediatly jump back to where you were when you first heard it. For me, that summer 2002 in Athens, GA. Who wouldn't want to be reminded of that?
3. Keep On Smilin', Wet Willie - This is one of the most underated songs in so many ways. Underated Southern Rock, underated soulful tune, and underated innovative song. Jimmy Hall sings the shit out of this song and damn near BEGS you to have a good time. A good, positve tune made to be listened to outside on the upswing of a cold-beer-buzz.
4. Polar Opposites, Modest Mouse - Summer is not all fun and games. Growing up in GA meant it was hot as hell, everything slows down to a crawl and it can be boring as hell. Polar Opposites always reminds me of that. Driving around with nothing to do, being bored, drinking on a porch for no reason. Plus the guitars literally sound like they are being melted in the heat.
5. Georiga, Ray Charles - I love this song with all my heart and soul. I'm biased, for obvious reasons, but I truly don't believe that a more beautiful song has ever, nor will ever, be recorded. It is slow and methodical but when you sing along you are begging for the next word to come. Can you imagine a better song to listen to in late summer when the sun is going down?

Hmm, top five hot summer jams.... this one is difficult. I am going to try and spray it around the infield a bit.
1. Summertime - Dj Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. You can say what you want about the street cred of this song, but if you tell me that you aren't going to roll down the windows and just roll when this comes on, then you're a goddamn liar.
2. How Soon is Now? - The Smiths. This was a hot summer jam for me and my friends. On boring saturday nights, we would have P's escort trolling around the back roads of Glenwood - just driving. Sitting quietly to the music, with the breeze from the open windows and no destination, somehow this song just made it better.
3. Time Machine - Ride. I have a very vivid memory of driving into Allerton Park at dusk to this song. I see that road every time I hear the song.
4. Keep the Cosmic Trigger Happy - Super Furry Animals. This songs just begs to be played loud. Isn't that THE criteria or a hot summer jam?
5. September - Earth, Wind and Fire. There is a reason this song is played at every wedding. It is the shit. If you have never experienced a hooptie full of people singing "issa pardee-ya" then you have missed out on something special.
