Jewish hip-hop artists rap on Torah, Chanukah



NEW YORK (Reuters) - They have baggy clothing, backward baseball caps, the "bling bling" and racy lyrics. And these days, rappers sometimes wear yarmulkes too.

Hip-hop music, which grew out of black inner cities, isn't typically associated with Jews, but as the genre has grown more popular, some Jewish artists have embraced it as their own, while transcending theological and ethnic differences.

New York-based Hip Hop Hoodios, whose name is a play on the Spanish word for Jews, is a Latino-Jewish group that has recorded in English, Spanish and Hebrew. Their lyrics include such sardonic lines as: "My nose is large, and you know I'm in charge."

A popular 26-year-old Hasidic singer, Matisyahu, raps in a brimmed hat and dark suit over reggae beats. "Torah food for my brain let it rain till I drown, Thunder! Let the blessings come down," he says in "King Without a Crown."

The growing genre has also seen artists like Remedy collaborate with mainstream acts like Wu-Tang Clan.

"It's very much a representation of the cooperative state of Jewish and black relations today," said Rabbi Marc Schneier, president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, which is chaired by hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons. "I view cooperation, not conflict, as the defining element."

While some commentators still see rifts between American blacks and Jews, many agree that relations have improved greatly. At the same time, hip-hop has gone mainstream.

Experts said hip-hop can appeal to audiences of diverse backgrounds, including Jews, while still maintaining its authenticity.

"It's impossible to separate this phenomenon from a move by Jews in their late teens to late 30s to explicitly identify themselves as Jews in American popular culture," said Joel Schalit, managing editor of Tikkun magazine, who personally likes two Israeli Hebrew-language artists -- Sagol 59 and HaDag Nahash.

"What might be new is that more artists are emphasizing their Jewishness in their content and marketing."

An example: Chutzpah, comprised of two suburban New York natives and a Los Angeles actor, whose first single from a self-titled CD and accompanying DVD is "Chanukah's Da Bomb."

"A lot of people think because 'Chanukah's Da Bomb' is the single, it's for Jewish people," said the group's 44-year-old dreadlocked member, David Scharff. "It's like saying Woody Allen is for Jewish people. It's for everybody."

Formed by music producer Tor Hyams, Chutzpah even enlisted 71-year-old veteran actor George Segal as "Dr. Dreck," its "coordinator."

"The lyrics are quite solid and informative, as well as witty, sharp and funny," Segal said in a phone interview. "That's what makes it work."

Chutzpah treads the line between seriousness and satire. Parody acts in Jewish hip-hop have been common. Among them, 50 Shekel was a takeoff on 50 Cent. M.O.T. was managed by Meshugge Knight, a takeoff on Suge Knight. And 2 Live Jews featured Dr. Dreidle and Ice Berg.

"If you're looking for a tale of 'gangsta' life, Jewish hip-hop might not be the place to start," said Alana Newhouse, arts and culture editor at the Forward newspaper.

"The best Jewish hip-hop artists plumb serious elements of Jewish history, but all are creating a new way to tell the story of Jewish experience."

Beastie Boys are the most commercially successful Jewish rap act, and the only one to achieve mainstream success. But it was only recently that their Jewish backgrounds began to be reflected in their lyrics.

Rabbi Schneier said Jewish hip-hop can resonate with non-Jewish listeners, including many with similar views in other areas.

"Jews view themselves as a minority when it comes to issues of race and changing demographics, and on many questions their responses are identical to those of African-American and Latino respondents," Schneier said. "Hip-hop is a unifying force that resonates with young people."

In the video for "Chanukah's Da Bomb," Chutzpah cruises town in a Volvo with a roof-mounted menorah and raps that Chanukah, "whichever way you spell it," is better than Christmas because it lasts seven days longer.

"Humor (is) one of the only things the Jews had when they were being oppressed for century after century," Hyams said.

"The only difference between us and any other hip-hop group is that they don't say their religions before they say they're a hip-hop group," he continued. "We say it because we're proud of it."

Last week I think I used up just about every bit of luck that I might of had in my lifetime. Why? Well, just take a look at the picture below.



As Ozzie Guillen and Jerry Reinsdorf visited Springfield, I got to be their escort around the capital. My job was to take them from the car to the Governor's office to the House Floor. Yeah it was pretty cool. I also got to hold the Commissioner's trophy.

I might not of been able to go to the world series, but 80,000 other people did. I don't think those 80,000 got to hold the Commissioner's trophy and personally thank the manager and the owner for such an amazing year of baseball in Chicago.

Thank you, I can't wait for Spring Training.

2005 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPION CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Doesn’t that just roll off the tongue? Yesterday was just a great night for the city of Chicago. Regardless of where your allegiance lies in this great divided city, you had to feel some satisfaction last night. Me, I was speechless, which says a lot if you know me. In fact, I am still speechless, so this is going to be a very brief post.

4 more wins and the White Sox will have their first World Championship since 1917.

This year’s White Sox / Cubs bets

Every year a friend of mine and I get together and make up several White Sox / Cubs bets. There are 5 bets and each one has it’s own individual prize and whoever wins 3 of the 5 bets gets an even bigger reward at the end of the year.

This is how our bets broke down this year.

As a die-hard Cubs fan, he must wear a White Sox jersey with the name that I choose to a game at Wrigley Field next summer. Does anybody have any good ideas on what should be on the back of the jersey?

Also, congratulations to the Chicago White Sox for putting down the defending world champion Boston Red Sox in three straight games to eliminate them from the playoffs. This couldn’t have happened to a better team and by that I mean the White Sox winning and the Red Sox losing.

Let's Go Go Go White Sox!

Yes I was, you Mountie fuck!

Is there a place in the country worse than Detroit? Well as far as major cities go, I don’t think so. Detroit is so bad; I ended up in Canada twice this past week.

I went up there to go root on my beloved White Sox and since I was there I figured I would give the city of Motown a chance. Let me just say that, there is absolutely nothing to do in the city of Detroit. Nothing at all. The place is dead in the afternoon, in the morning and then the freaks come out at night.

Let me just say, you have never been offered to buy crack properly unless you have been offered to buy crack in Detroit. The best part is when you turn the rocks down; the crack heads will then offer you some Popeye’s chicken. It is a really weird place.

Anyway, Detroit is a pretty dull place, so I found myself heading on over to the other side of the border to visit the great city of Windsor. This place has a lot to offer. Strip clubs, bars, cool coffee shops and just pure insanity on the streets. I am not talking the kind of insanity that one might be committed for, but instead I am talking about the random acts of craziness, but before we get to Windsor, let’s get to the border guards.

Crossing over the border is a lot different going to Canada than it is from going over from Illinois to Indiana. The first time we went to Canada the border guard was a pissed off mall cop. This guy examines the id’s and looks at us and asks us what are purpose in Canada is. Well, I guess we should have had a better answer than, “I don’t know, hang out?” He then goes into a 10 min Q & A, ranging from whether or not I was born in America to how much money I had in my wallet. Overall, it was fairly painless, but some of the questions you get asked kind of make you think “are you serious,” but in this day and age, I guess you can never be too safe.

Another thing learned, when a border guard asks you what your purpose in the country is, don’t tell him or her “Oh I don’t know, to bang your mom,” it doesn’t go over very well.

As we made it across to Windsor, many random things started to happen. We see a 50-year-old man jogging with no shirt on but with both of his nipples pierced. Strange right? After that we go to the strip in Windsor and find a TV crew on the side of the street interviewing random people about this new reporter who is joining their staff. This simple task turns into something special when they enter into the “Shawarma Palace” to interview the owner. They make this guy, who was ridiculously nice by the way, say that he knows who this new reporter is and scream at his photo in Arabic. They do this for at least 6 takes and it gets better every time.

The last shot was of him, screaming at this photo, throwing the picture to the ground and says “No Shawarma for you” He then begins to walk out of the restaurant and the camera pans at him leaving of comes across my face, I just shake my head and say “OK, are you ready?”

So I guess if you live in Windsor, you may have seen me on TV, if not, take it from me, it was pretty humorous.

Other than that, the trip was just filled with traffic and more crack heads. I did win a free dinner from Popeye’s chicken, but I left that in the hotel as a tip.

Detroit What!

Oh yeah and the Sox won 2 of 4 games to win the A.L. Central Division. Now bring on those clowns from Bean Town.

The Long Overdue Covers Album

As some of you already know, I have been trying to put together a covers album with some good cover songs by some good bands. Some might say, “JP, what would you consider good?” My response to that would be, Your Mom! Damn, take that.

Nah, I am looking for bands that you would say you like and that you wouldn’t be ashamed to introduce to your mom.

When I originally started putting this together, I had three rules. 1) No Beatles (why, because everyone has done a Beatles cover at some time in their career), 2) No live covers, they must be studio tracks and 3) No band that is being covered could be used more than once on the album.

Well, since this limited things and would have prevented me from putting some really good songs on the album, I have decided to scrap rules number 1 and 3. The no live covers rule is still solid and will not be changed for anyone. Not even you. You know who you are.

Mullet Night is real!

Here are some photos from Mullet Night at the Sox game this past Friday.



This was the band playing out in front of the park before the game. As I was walking to the park, I heard them play "Everybody's Working for the Weekend" by the great Canadian group Loverboy. From the distance, I wasn't sure if it was a cover band or if it was actually Loverboy. As I got closer, I still was not sure.


We only have Coors and Tequiza.


Just accept it, because I don't know why he's there either.
